Rohingya Muslims in Yong Cong, Buthidaung are passing their days in terror following the death of a Rakhine man in their neighbourhood.
On Tuesday, a Rakhine man walked into the Muslim neighbourhood around noon and sat in a bench outside a stall. As Rakhines generally don’t come to the neighbourhood, the Rohingyas grew curious and asked if he was there to meet someone. The man replied he just needed a place to sit as he was very tired. Locals say they understood he was under the heavy influence of alcohol and left him alone.
The man dozed off and an hour later he died at the spot. Rohingyas in the area panicked and left.
Later when Rakhines came to the area to retrieve the dead man, they swore revenge accusing the Rohingyas of poisoning the man. Since then a sense of panic has been prevailing in Yong Cong.
Government officials later summoned community elders and retreated the threat of the Rakhines accusing the Muslims of foul play.
