Lawaka officials have told Rohingyas in Buthidaung that those not accepting the green card might be arrested as IS militants.
On Tuesday, Lawaka officials addressed a huge gathering of Rohingya elders in Buthidaung town. Here they said that very soon the army will launch a crackdown against militants from the IS in Buthidaung. The raid will result in a house by house search in many areas. Those who don’t have the green card will not have any proper id papers and they will be arrested by the army on suspicion of involvement with the terror group, even if they are innocent, said the Lawaka.
So it was best if the Rohingyas accept the identity papers for their own benefit.
The green card is an identity paper given to foreigners who have been naturalised as citizens of the country. Rohingyas however refuse the classification saying they are indigenous to Arakan state. Accepting the green card would also require the Muslim community to denounce their Rohingya identity and accept they are Bengalis.
The Lawaka also said they will be in Arakan state for a month and if anyone did not take the green card in this time, they will lose their chance forever.
The Lawaka also said those refusing the green card would continue to face movement restrictions and other hardships including permission to marry, give birth, education, healthcare and so on. During the meeting the Rohingyas were ordered not to ask questions.
Incidentally there is no evidence of an IS cell operating in Arakan.
