Many Rohingyas are being duped into going into India by traffickers. In recent years, many Rohingyas are choosing India as a preferred destination over Bangladesh where livelihood opportunities for the refugees are almost non existent.
However India is proving a rather dubious destination. The traffickers promise refugees that there are good jobs in India and UNHCR facilities. Both the claims have little truth. India is unwilling to take in Muslim refugees viewed as a security threat and many Rohingyas caught on the border spend years in jail.
Additionally many of the young girls going into India are separated from their families and sold into the country’s bourgeoning sex industry. Also the refugees are robbed and have to start a life in India without any money. This leads to a near starvation situation for many of them as income in India is almost as bad as Bangladesh.
One trafficker gaining notoriety in recent months is Abdul Gaffar. The Rohingya trafficker promises refugees safe passage to Delhi but on the journey, robs refugees of all money and sometimes sells the girls into prostitution.
Many girls from Bangladesh and Arakan seeking a better life along with their families in India have been forced to join the sex trade.
