Two men were mercilessly beaten up and detained by BGP for attending prayers on one of the holiest nights in the Islamic calendar.
On Tuesday night preceding the 27th day of Ramadan (considered as Laylat-ul-Qadr by many in this part of the world), Md Anwar and Md Momtaz were on their way to the mosque in Hawar Dil, Maungdaw North when a team of BGP men called them over. When asked where they were going, the men replied they were going to attend the special salah.
At this answer, the BGP men erupted in fury and started assaulting them. The two men were then told there was no need to pray so much and were then kept in detention.
On hearing the news, villagers rushed to the spot and demanded an explanation from the BGP. The security men then claimed the two men were thieves.
The two were later released for a payment of 370,000 kyats.
