Two Rohingya Muslim boys have been brutally assaulted by armed Rakhine men in Warca para, Maungdaw South.
On Monday, five boys went to the nearby hills to collect wood when they came face to face with a group of armed Rakhine fighters. The boys ran as fast as they could, but the fighters caught two of them.
The two boys were brutally beaten till they were covered completely in blood and lost consciousness. During the assault, the men seemed furious that the Rohingyas were collecting wood from their places.
They were later handed over to Rakhine villagers in the locality.
When Muslim villagers went to bring them back, the Rakhines claimed that the five boys were cutting wood from their gardens. They demanded compensation for the alleged damage and went into a long negotiation.
All these time, the two boys were vomiting blood, and were unable to move.
The Muslims then paid 700,000 kyats to release the boys.
The victims are Rashid Ullah (14), s/o Habib Ullah and Rahim Ullah (10), s/o Fazal Haque.
In recent days, authorities and their cohorts have cracked down on fishermen and wood collectors. These are generally the two remaining sources of livelihoods for the community.
Locals perceive this as a calculated move to starve the Rohingyas and gradually expel them from Arakan.
