Police and government collaborators have fined two men for trading a fishing boat without their permission, according to our local correspondent.
On March 25, Karim Ullah s/o Gora Miah bought a boat from Md Shafiq s/o Abdul Rahman for 800,000 kyats in Gojjon Dhia, Maungdaw South.
When the Aishwaramu of the area Siraj Ullah heard of this transaction, he informed the police. They came to the house of Karim Ullah and told him that he had broken the law by buying a fishing boat without informing proper authorities. He was then forced to pay 400,000 kyats as a fine.
Police are now looking for Shafiq who is also expected to pay a huge fine.
In recent weeks, the government has cracked down on the Rohingya fishing industry to deprive them out of one of the last remaining source of livelihood.
