A brother and a sister has been assaulted and arrested by police for speaking out against the green card scheme.
On Monday, Lawaka officials along with police and BGP went to Siddhar fara of Maungdaw town and called out the residents. Here the Lawaka went on a speech on how the government was kind enough to consider the plight of the stateless people and wanted to issue them with green cards. They said that if the Rohingyas accepted the green cards, they would be free to travel anywhere they want.
They were opposed by Fazal Ahmed (43) and Noor Nahar (40) who spoke out against the green card. The police on the scene fell upon them and assaulted them mercilessly. They were then led away to prison.
The arrested Rohingyas have been charged as human traffickers. Lawaka told residents anyone opposing the scheme would meet the same fate.
Some Rohingyas alleged to be government collaborators signed up for the green card.
The green card is given to foreigners naturalised as Burmese citizens. But Rohingyas claim to be indigenous to Arakan. They also refuse to be identified as Bengalis.
