Two men arrested as human traffickers in Merulla, Maungdaw South are being continuously tortured in custody.
Solim Ullah and Anisur along with ten others were arrested on June 16. While the others have been released from prison following the payment of hefty bribes, these two men continue facing torture.
All the men arrested were vocal against injustices committed against the local Rohingya community and actively involved in social work.
There are reports the government has prepared a list of social activists and are planning to charge them as human traffickers. These men in Merulla are likely to have been charged by this project.
The ten other men arrested are Nurul Amin, Ziaul Haque, Md Hashem, Firoz, Enayet Ullah, Bottu, Nurul Haque, Abul Hashim, Hasan and Younus.
Yunus was released after a payment of 1.5 million kyats, Nurul Amin for a million and Nurul Haque for 800,000 kyats.
Others had to pay bribes ranging from 300,000 to 400,000 kyats.
All the men were severely tortured in custody.
